Kelpak seaweed biostimulant drives up to 27% yield increase in table grapes
New trial findings suggest that the latest grape harvest has delivered encouraging gains for South African farmers using a biostimulant derived from seaweed harvested off the Cape coast.
The findings come at a time when the local fruit industry continues to operate at scale, with South Africa exporting close to 80 million cartons of table grapes annually, according to the South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) 2025 statistics report.
In the trial on Sable Seedless table grapes conducted in Klawer, Kelpak treatments delivered a 27% increase in yield and helped shift more of the crop towards larger berry sizes. Applied at key stages of vine and berry development through the season, the programme showed benefits at harvest and after harvest. Post-harvest assessments after 20 days of cold storage also found improved rachis condition, with more bunches retaining the green colour that is widely regarded as an important quality marker for export markets.
Kelpak is a natural biostimulant derived from the brown seaweed Ecklonia maxima , using its proprietary Cellburst cold extraction process. This process helps preserve the seaweed’s natural bioactive properties to support root growth, nutrient uptake and overall plant vigour, and making it a useful tool for improving early-season development and crop performance under variable growing conditions.
“What these trials show is that relatively small interventions at the right stage of development can translate into meaningful gains at harvest,” says Linda Greyling, Head of Technical Support at Kelpak. “In table grapes, even small improvements in berry size and uniformity can significantly increase pack-out and export value for producers.”
The results are particularly relevant given the structure of South Africa’s fruit export industry, where quality consistency and shelf life are critical for maintaining competitiveness in international markets. SATI data shows that Europe and the UK together account for more than 70% of South Africa’s table grape exports, placing additional pressure on producers to meet strict quality standards.
Greyling notes that the consistency of results across different crops and regions is key. “We are seeing similar trends across multiple trials - improved yield, better sizing, and enhanced quality. That consistency gives producers confidence that these outcomes are repeatable under commercial conditions,” she says.
“As input costs rise and environmental pressures increase, the ability to improve efficiency without expanding production area is becoming increasingly important. These results reinforce the role of scientifically validated biostimulants in helping producers increase output and maintain export quality under increasing pressure.”
